Machine Head have been in the music business way longer than MCR, while MCR is not a TERRIBLE band. They still dont match Machine head. Kerrang have made a terrible mistake. They should make different awards for different genres to avoid this sort of mix up.

I'm one who very VERY seldomly stretches out my dislike for another band, but when it comes to My Chemical Romance, you bet your ass I raise my voice up.
This is a band who at one point in time, was something, much like AFI in their golden days. But now what? Whiney, annoying lyrics about pain and suffering from a guy who looks like Billy Corgan goofy son, and sings like Freddie Murcury's tone-deaf child, with music we have heard before, over and over and over again.
I don't just blame the band for what they are now. Becoming a "radio band" sometimes means changing yourself and your music so you can bring your music to the ears of more people, because people are lazy. If they would go out once in a while and search for the good music that is out there before it become compromised by radio stations into make them sound more commercial and dull, maybe we could save music.
Machine Head however, has never settled for less then 100%. These guys have been around for almost 15 years, pushing for the progression of heavy metal since day one, even when the thought of being one of the biggest bands in metal was just a dream. They do it without the constant radio airplay. They play TO the people, the people who look for a good band, the people who don't need something shoved in their faces. In return, they have given us music that makes you feel real emotion. Sure, there's pain in their lyrics, there's frustration, who wouldn't be pissed is someone killed your friend and people trashed him afterwards(i.e. The death of Dimebag Darell R.I.P), but there is also hope, there's that notion that everything will be ok, even through the toughest of times.
So for those of you who listen to nothing but My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Angels and Airwaves, ect., let me end with this. I'm not knock on you, you have a right to listen to whatever you want, but do me a favor, go out, Listen to some Machine Head, listed to Shadows Fall, listen to the bands out there that you wouldn't have found unless you looked and listened, and listen with an open heart and an open mind, take in the music. If at that point you still don't like what you hear, come back and trash them.
I love music from every genre and every age, I just wish everyone else felt the same.

My Chemical Romance's latest album was a concept album. It was influenced by bands such as Queen and Pink Floyd. Yes, it is more 'radio friendly' and they have gained a lot more fans from it. And as an MCR fan, I definitely prefer the first two albums that were inspired by Black Flag, Iron Maiden and The Misfits, and were created after at least two years of non-stop touring.
And while some of MCRs fans only listen to music made by popular bands, others listen to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, other rock icons and underground bands.
Even if we don't have the same music opinions, I agree with your last point that everyone should listen to a band before criticizing.

The critical acclaim and awards MH have received for their last two records are not only deserving for the releases that earnt them, but for the uncompromising, never-give-up attitude and grassroots approach to fans they've adopted since day one, 15 years ago.
While MCR fans might not understand the quantum leap between their 'current' fave and Machine Head, let me assure you that the right band won, for the right reasons.

I think all the MCR people here need to realise Kerrang! is a rock magazine covering all aspects of rock, and it's not just about what you constantly see on the telly that is what the general consensus is.
tbh im a big fan of all the nominated bands (not so much MCR, but i can still appreciate their stuff) and imo, fob had several hit singles off their album and probably deserved it. Biffy are my fave band and although it is an imbah album, their old stuff is better and they're not big enough quite yet (next time :p). Machineheads album, although good, was very much a continuation of their last album and fails compared to old school MH \m/
Enter shikari, been a big fan since before they were big, but this album was over-produced, the stuff they had out before this album (same songs) was a much better listen imo.

For all you whining and asking what MH did to deserve this award, I say listen to the album. 8 tracks. Each song is like 6-10 minutes long. Each song is really like 3 songs rolled into one. The Blackening shows true musicianship, inspiration and an amazing amount of determination. There hasn't been an album composed of this magnitude since, well, TOOL's "Ænema" is the only thing that even comes to mind. To sum up, QUIT WHINING. The reason MH won is because more empassioned people voted for MH. Deserving doesn't even begin to describe it.

The guitar, bass and drum work in The Blackening is outstanding, and pretty much every Guitar and Drum magazine out there has said the same (Robb Flynn on the cover of this month's Total Guitar?) I would like to see YOU (and MCR for that matter) come up with glorious riffs and solo's that are equal to those that are on The Blackening.

The reason Machine Head won and My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy didn't is because, for once, mainstream success was ignored in favor of which band ACTUALLY put out a more impressive piece of work.
Machine Head ended a 13-year streak of making albums that everyone said couldn't match up to "Burn My Eyes". Do you know how often a rebirth like that happens for a band? Almost never. This album is truly something special, even on its own merit. The songwriting is tight (not slang for cool, you hip fuckers). It is beautifully arranged, epic in its own right, and most of all ferocious and emotional.
What bands such as MCR and Fall Out Boy don't seem to grasp is that one can evoke and express emotion without having every song become either a tirade against some girl, or a self-deprecating piece of trash. There are no musical genres in today's and age (with the possible exception of mainstream rap) that have become more mired in unoriginality, and stagnated almost to a stop. Pop-punk is surviving on impressionable youngsters that desperately want to follow the latest trend. In the many posts on this page, I have yet to see one from an MCR or Fall Out Boy supporter that is in any way different from the way the sterotypical scene/emo/myspace youngster would have responded. All you're doing is perpetuating the stereotype. Use whole words, please. Years down the road, your friends will be joking about all the shitty stuff you guys listened to back in the day, meanwhile I will still be popping The Blackening in for a spin and enjoying every minute of it as if it was the first time I'd heard it. That's the difference - metal isn't created to be the flavor of the month. It's created to be timeless.

OK, I'm going to stay calm on this one, although it's quite difficult. I'm not going to pander to the metalhead stereotype of just chanting SLAYERRRR or whatever. I'll just lay down a few things.
(1) Like or love metal, Machine Head's new album is one of the best, if not the very the best, metal album ever made. Considering metal's 30 year legacy, that's pretty impressive.
(2) I don't like MCR, but I'll give them their due, I can see why people like them. But their album rides the wave, whereas Machine Head have breathed life into a genre that often wheezes out of old age.
(3) No offence, but a rock opera ISN'T ORIGINAL. Please get that idea out of your heads. To be honest, I've listened to a lot of MCR, and there's nothing really original in what they're doing. That's not something I'm using against them, rather I'm just pointing it out to the people on here seeming to insist that MCR have broken all the rules with their new album. They haven't.
Kerrang whores bands such as MCR 364 days a year, so I find it pretty hilarious you're unable to give just one brief moment of glory to a band that's struggled hugely over the past 10 years, but is in a rich vein of form at the moment.
And anyone claiming MFH have no fans so this must've been fixed. Kindly check out the Download streams, and you'll see 60,000 going insane to them just a couple of months ago. I'm not even remotely surprised they won.

Wow! i'm shocked, but for a good reason! I never thought so many people would vote for Machine head as they're not as "commercial" and desperate to play on every TV show they can. However, it is completely deserved. For musicianship, technicality and just pure quality in all respects of the album, the Blackening won in every department. Finally some fantastic metal is getting rewarded.
i can't see how all these other people commenting can back up their claims anyway. how can they say: MCR has worked harder, or put more effort in?!?! they weren't there in the production so it's just bollocks.
Kerrang at heart is metal, and the metal album won. i'd like to see any of the other bands try and compose and play any of the songs on the blackening. it's just not happening. and i bet half of the people on here haven't even heard it.

I actually thought MCR would win this because everyone bumbs them these days, yet I don't think they are producing as good music as they used to years ago, it's just they are the "in" band right now.
But the new MH album is beyond anything that has been released in the last few years, and it makes a refreshing change for some real heavy music to win something rather than this new wave of pop-rock that has been filling kerrang for the past few years.

People, music is subjective no doubt about that, but comments like "The Awards were rigged, only 4 people like Machine Head" and so on are... well ignorant and unfounded. Last time I saw MH live I was in the pit and around me were 75.000 other people, all singing along and waving banners. They got more recognition than any other band on the bill that night, this was at Donnington people. The day before, MCR had next to nobody at their show, and many of the ones that were there just wanted to demonstrate to the festival management what they thought of the new direction the festival is taking, and bottled and boo'ed MCR off stage. So before you make statements about the popularity of a band, remember, Machine Head might not have "as many", but the ones they have are a hundred fold more dedicated and loyal than many of the bandwagon fans of MCR. quality over quantity.

Machine Head so deserved this award! They've been around for 15 years now and have earned every single fan they have from pure dedication to the music. This album is a testament to that. The Blackening is the culmination of 4 years of hard work from touring, writing, re-writing and going back to the roots of true thrash metal. MCR and FOB are just riding some passing emo fad. Give it 2 years and no-one will care about them. But with Machine Head, I see them staying around for another 15 years making true metal!

having not heard machine heads album i cant actually comment on whether it is a good album or not but i have heard some of their music whilst listening to kerrang radio & watching random kerrang bits on the hits (being a poor ex student i cant afford proper sky so just have freeview & they limit the amount of rock for the supposedly more popular stuff) and i have to say that whilst i listen to metal (especially some of the older groups) there is a limit to the amount you can listen to. MCR & FOB are more radio friendly groups & that would be why they are more popular with younger listeners - a lot of teenagers will buy what is accessible to them - just because a lot of you happen to not like a particular band there is no need to waste time on slagging off their fans & making broad generalisations about them

I agree with you there Nicki. It's just I don't understand why all these people have to turn around and say that Machine Head done nothign to deserve it. It really hits a nerve because all Machine Head fans know how far Flynn and the guys have gone to get where they are today, how much they have fought against everything this world has thrown at them.
